Dear parish family and friends of Our Lady of the Scapular,
If we were to enter the main body of our church as if we were entering it for the first time, or through the eyes of a first-time visitor, what would your eye be drawn to? Perhaps first our beautiful crucifix, with the light shining upon it? Then the tabernacle, housing the real presence of our Lord. Perhaps our banners of “Love God” and “Love People.” As you take in the rest of sanctuary, perhaps your eye is then drawn to our Blessed Mother. Then the Book of the Gospels. Then the altar. Everything we need to draw deeper in our faith and guide us on our earthly journey can be found here, and it encourages us to stop and pause in the busyness of our lives.
This weekend in our second reading, in the beautiful Letter of St. Paul to the Romans, we will hear him make note of the commandment "You shall love your neighbour as yourself." Love of God, and love of neighbour, the two of the greatest commandments. Listen to the Word this weekend, perhaps as if you are hearing it for the first time. Look around and take everything in as if you were entering our church for the first time. And ask yourself how you are living out these commandments. Fueled by the Word and the Eucharist, may we express our love of God in our words, deeds, and actions, by loving our neighbour. For when we love our neighbour, we love God who dwells within them.

Lord, please bless all our educators and children as
they make their way back to their classrooms for another year.
Help them to feel excitement and joy in the promise of a new start.
Give them everything they need to start their classes.
Give them all they need all year.
Give them imagination and creativity to make wonders out of what they do have.
Help them stretch their budgets and their supplies.
Give them wisdom all year.
Help them quickly spot the little souls who are going to need something extra from them this year.
Help them have just the right words of encouragement for each student.
Give them loads of love. Help the love in their hearts just overflow so they always have plenty to spare.
We can’t conjure it up Lord, but You give in abundance...please supply all the love teachers need.
Please supply them energy too, Lord.
Please let them sleep well at night so they are rested and refreshed each morning.
Don’t let them take their problems and worries to bed with them at night.
Give them patience with students, with parents, and with their administration.
Again, Lord, it’s You who supplies in abundance.
Please keep the students and teachers safe this year.
Let the students be excited about this wonderful world and all there is to learn about it.
Help them to be interested in each other, for there’s a wealth to learn about and from each other,
and this is true for teachers and parents as well.
Give the parents willing hearts, both to help in the classroom if they can, and certainly to be involved in their children’s homework and in their stories as the year goes on.
Let this be a truly wonderful year for everyone involved in education.
Let everyone feel, at the end of the year, that they learned all they could and gave the best they had.

Indigenous Healing & Reconciliation Fund
Special Collection
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund was established to accept donations from 73 Catholic dioceses across the country, and to advance healing and reconciliation initiatives, fulfilling the $30 million financial commitment made by Canada’s bishops in September 2021.The fund seeks to support projects that are determined locally, in collaboration with First Nations, Métis and Inuit partners.
The Indigenous Reconciliation Fund has established the following criteria for grant applications: healing and reconciliation for communities and families; culture and language revitalization; education and community building; and dialogues for promoting indigenous spirituality and culture. The fund has been designed to meet the highest standards of transparency and good governance and is overseen by a board of directors made up of Indigenous leaders.
For next weekend, the yellow donation envelopes can be found in your box of offertory envelopes, and they are also available at the doors of the church.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word
- Volunteer Opportunity!
Our program is held during the 9:30 am Sunday Masses and will resume at the end of September.
Our team of volunteers is looking for Leaders, adults who are interested in leading the discussions and activities related to the Readings and theme of the day.

New Children’s Liturgy Helpers, both adults and youth grade 7 and up, are also invited.

Training is provided and all volunteers serve on a rotating basis. An orientation meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm.

Join us as we learn how to find grace in the everyday and turn even the most chaotic moments into a prayer with “A Mom’s Liturgy of the Hours.”

During the month of August we received 35 calls for assistance and in response, helped 54 adults and 44 children experiencing food insecurity. Thank you for your ongoing support which enables us to help our neighbours in need.

In 1997 he was beatified by Pope John Paul II. We pray and ask for your prayers that Blessed Frederic Ozanam will be made a saint.

Why Make a Holy Hour?
Venerable Fulton Sheen, said; the Holy Hour is necessary for the Church….
To abide with Christ is spiritual fellowship, as He insisted on the solemn and sacred night of the Last Supper, the moment He chose to give us the Eucharist: “You have only to live on in Me, and I will live on in you” (John 15:4). He wants us in His dwelling: “That you, too, may be where I am” (John 14:3).
Come visit our Lord in our St. Joseph Adoration Chapel. Our Chapel is open Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. After hours requires you to register for an access card. Annual Mass of Penance and Healing
A Mass of Penance and Healing will be celebrated on:
Monday, September 14, 2026, at 7:00 pm
at the Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria (3 Lyman Street, St. Catharines).
Please plan to attend as we gather to beg for God’s mercy and healing, and to pray for those harmed by the sinful actions and abuse committed by some of the priests, religious and laity of our diocese who have represented God and our diocese over the years. We will also pray to be strengthened in our resolve to be holy and faithful servants of Our Lord and the people of God.
